The only reason that this rule sucks sometimes is if the team that eliminates your team continues to beat the other teams they play, thus serving to elongate your inner feelings of loss and disappointment, as well as further your dislike for that team. For example: As a Canucks fan, if I choose to root against the Kings right now its looking more and more like I'll be setting myself up for some real sadness.

If I was judging this list based purely on the number of Canadian players who play vital roles in their team's success I think I'd have to say I was cheering for an LA (Philly West) v. Philly final... although I suppose a pretty solid argument could be made for Phoenix or STL as well.

In all honesty I think you alluded to the reason why he won't be able to "demand as much as he wants" in your post. Because the Kings still have Bernier and everybody (including Quick) knows that Bernier is a top-drawer NHL prospect/could very easily be an NHL starter, Quick won't be able to demand an outlandish contract. He'll still get a fat paycheque but it won't be as crazy as you think.

The NHL would also likely want to avoid Phoenix having anything to do with the final due to some potential bad press regarding a conflict of interest between the team and the league.

O.o ...I have no idea how a news article headline like that could possibly translate into a comment about fair weather fans... and moreover I wasn't talking about Gillis making excuses, although I can understand how you would perceive it that way. I was talking about the media as well as the "fair weather fans" making excuses. I wish the post-playoff discussion around this team each year was about the game itself and not "why they choked". You are an aggressive person sir and I find your tone most disagreeable.

Nor I. I don't really take issue with him acknowledging that it had a huge emotional toll on the team, or that it seemed to throw the whole team off... I feel like those are most likely somewhat factual statements, but he had to know that saying those things was going to eventually lead to a headline that read "Canucks GM Mike Gillis Blames Emotional Regular-Season Win Against Bruins for Team's Struggles"... Plus I am really not a fan of what feels like a constant need to make excuses around this team... As others have said, just fucking own it, suck it up, come back hungrier. WE LOST. LA played awesome. They deserved to win.

As much as I agree with you about the Red Wings being a surprise out in the first round it is also looking like they came up against the best team out of all the teams that I wrote up there as hypothetically advancing in the West (other than St.Louis perhaps). I'm not saying that if they'd played against Phoenix or L.A. that they necessarily would've made it through, but I feel like they would have possibly had a better shot.

In all honesty, I'm just really glad to see that other people on here are pointing out some of the other great rookies (Faulk and Read to name a few) who deserve to be included in conversations about the Calder. The fact that there is this much young talent (much of it coming out nowhere it seems) in the game bodes very well for the game.
