Newly-Released Surveillance Video Shows Police Officers Brutally Beating, Suffocating, and Tasing Kelly Thomas to Death by davidreiss666in politics

[–]strixvarius 0 points1 point ago

As another young American who has spent years in Germany and Australia, I must heartily disagree.

Moving away does not get you away from all problems. However, it does get you away from "problems like this," if you move to a first-world country. eg:

  • Greater scrutiny on the police and politicians
  • Fewer victimless crimes that police can use to abuse their power (the "War on Drugs," for example)
  • A direct return on your high taxes (public transit, health, education, safety)
  • Healthcare
  • Affordable university education
  • Liveable minimum wage

When I compare my experiences between the US, Germany, and Australia, the US is the clear loser in each of these categories.

Simpler alternatives to socket.io? by 33ain node

[–]strixvarius 0 points1 point ago

I can't recommend sockjs. We tried it because we agree that socket.io is becoming cumbersome. However, sockjs is not, definitely not, production ready. Documentation doesn't line up with implementation... implementation is sloppy and difficult/impossible to fix quickly. Basic things like providing a list of transports you're willing to use (which according to the docs is implemented) is not in fact anywhere in the code, or is only half finished.

Take a look at the source and see for yourself. I appreciate what the guy is trying to do (and he's very nice/helpful) but from one guy who's made this mistake... I feel like I should warn others against it.

Why most of us hate cops......and why one good cop can protect the reputation of many (at the very end). by detroitfan4life86in videos

[–]strixvarius 0 points1 point ago

I'd be interested in hearing your experiences with good vs bad police on you ride-alongs.

I also did a ride-along (since I didn't like hating cops from what I assumed were just a few outlying dickheads. I wanted to educate myself on the good '99%' of cops). In the end I was even more disgusted with police than before I began.

Sorry, this is terrible advice and a general investment fallacy.

Houses should be evaluated exactly like any other large financial investment. If you find undervalued property and can afford to put 30% down, and can guarantee that you won't get a better job offer in another city, country, etc during the entire period of your mortgage - fine.

Otherwise, rent a place you enjoy in a city where your profession pays well. Take the extra money each month and invest it in something with higher returns than a house (and that is, almost always, more liquid as well). Congratulations, you have the benefits of an investment and a place to live that doesn't also limit your lifestyle options for 30 years.

Thinking of moving to Charlotte - tips? by papajohn56in Charlotte

I said, "unless you enjoy driving everywhere," explicitly because (in most cities) one of the primary benefits of living downtown is a decreased dependency on cars / less time spent commuting.

If you don't mind it, then you don't. Some people enjoy being able to walk places (like myself).

After living downtown myself, I have to recommend (unless you enjoy driving everywhere despite living downtown) finding a place near the only grocery store downtown: Harris Teeter on 6th.

Otherwise there's literally no access to groceries for any crazy amount of rent.

There's better access in the Dilworth area.

You've gotta be a cloistered academic if you think professors lead anything ;) The people out in the field... lead the field.

Logged in just to point out that this is demonstrably bullshit (and clearly not posted by an engineer with any experience in the field):

Even if you optimistically take the highest outlier (Petroleum Engineer) at $155k mid-career median, you're still wrong by $295k.

I agree; I find that once I'm using the same concept three times already - without abstracting it - then I'm in a good point to consider abstracting it.

If you abstract earlier, YAGNI and also you ain't gonna do it right, since you haven't implemented it in different contexts/use cases.
