Obama Administration considers cutting $100 billion from Pell Grant and other higher education funding over ten years. The new rules would cap financial aid at $5,500 per student. by asm129in news

You assume all students have jobs after college or they actually complete their degrees. I've had students who were enrolled in classes and while simultaneously living in a homeless shelter. The cost of actual tuition is low, so many of them take out a buttload of loans for easy quick cash that doesn't depend on credit. They'll just borrow and borrow and borrow until they can't anymore, which is a LONG time.

At one of the schools where I teach, 90% of students never repay their student loans.

90%.

Possibly moving to LA from the Northeast. Good idea? by mancakein LosAngeles

Hmm, the Pasadena/Glendale/Burbank area is hot in the summer, but not as hot as the San Fernando Valley and DEFINITELY not as hot as the Inland Empire. We live in Pasadena and it's totally bearable-- lots of trees and nice public spaces.

Great point about the east side. My best friends are all in the Pasadena/Burbank/Eagle Rock/South Pasadena area. The west side feels as foreign as the surface of the moon.

When to actually send back a dish at a restaurant by vtbarrerain food

We'll send food and drinks back in restaurants where we are known regulars. When you tip well and know your servers, they want to make sure you're getting the meal you wanted. It hasn't happened often but when it happens, I feel totally comfortable sending something back that isn't up to par.

I've been watching packages get bigger and bigger for years. I wish they were dropping the size AND the price but I'm glad to see packages get smaller. This is also good motivation to do even more cooking from scratch.

I kinda feel the same way. I bought a box of Cheese-Its yesterday, and I'm being more mindful about eating because there just aren't that many of them.

Home buying: In retrospect, what would you have done differently, in buying a home (features, loan, timing, old/new, anything)? by rdu01in Frugal

My family is in real estate, so I'll just disclose that up front. My experience with new homes bought from builders, you're going to buy in in "phases". The earlier you buy in a development, the lower your price. Of course, that lower price comes with risk-- near my work, there was a development where they sold out the first phase but never finished the neighborhood. By "never finished", I mean that the sewers in the neighborhood don't function and many of the streets were never paved (the builder fled the country and the buyers are SOL.) Builders do plan their phases so they coincide with the traditional real estate calendar (ie, everyone wants to buy and sell in the spring and summer) but in my experience, there's not a lot of wiggle room on price as with a traditional home. The "wiggle room" usually comes in the model you pick, options you select and so on.

  1. We bought in the summer of 2008. I don't think we could have timed it better than that. If you're looking to buy a new home, time of year doesn't matter as much, assuming you're buying directly from the builder. Buying from individuals is affected by winter weather, school schedules and so on.
  2. We bought a home that was built in 1942, so this wasn't in our control. We are in the process of updating the entire house though, so we're customizing the hoohaa out of it.
  3. New homes can have TONS of problems. Don't assume you'll buy something worry-free simply because it is new. Our older house has the benefit of surviving many earthquakes (we are in LA) and is also made of redwood (which means we'll never have termites!) Our home is also in an older, established neighborhood where our investment is more sure. I'm not telling you to buy and older home but don't assume you're buying something superior because it is new. Additionally, our inspector was awesome and found both the good and bad in our house. He actually inspected two properties with this inspector and he found a TON of hidden problems with the first place. He loved the second place and said he would have bought it himself if we weren't already in escrow on it.

6 MONTHS SMOKE FREE...AND I AM DISGUSTED: by DIGGYRULESin stopsmoking

Just remember that going back to smoking won't take the weight off. Additionally, your weight gain may have been coincidental with your smoking cessation-- my metabolism crashed hard in my late twenties and I wasn't a smoker by then.

If you're looking to tone up, focus less on cardio and more on strength training. You'll see the changes you want much more quickly than walking. I'm a teacher too and my quads are really defined because I spend so much time on my feet. A few tweaks to your diet may be in order to. Have you visited 2x? You might get some more tailored advice there.

I am super, super proud of you and will do anything I can to make the next days and weeks easier for you. I know you can't do it for me, you have to do it for yourself, but I want you to know that I'm getting a huge benefit from your quitting (and so is the dog, the cat, our bank accounts and your future little redditor.) I'll do anything I can to help you make this quit the final quit.

It's often bewildering how people act around someone who is struggling to have a child. My SIL who is newly pregnant with her second child spent Christmas day complaining about her morning sickness to me and talking about how she wasn't sleeping well. I finally said, "I would let someone stab me in the face a hundred times to have a child. Seriously. I'm not the right person to complain about this stuff too." I'm sorry. I know there isn't always a right way to handle this stuff. You are totally allowed to ask your friends to be sensitive to your loss.

I'm so sorry. The holidays are really tough for this kind of thing. We've been ttc for a long time and I spent most of this season at the bottom of a wine glass. 6 friends announced pregnancies, as did my sister-in-law AND I had several people come to me and announce TO ME, "And you're pregnant too!" wtf

I've felt bruised and depressed for about a month now, but 2011 is going to be our year. I'm excited for it to be January, to focus on mental and physical health, to kick ass at my job, to love my husband (and the dog and the cat) and to live my life without children, knowing that we will have children in our life some day, even if I don't bear them and you will too. Huge hugs to you. 2010 is nearly over; 2011 is going to be awesome.

Is there a ttc subreddit? I think we need one.

I've clicked on ads plenty of times. I've even surfed around a site, looking for an ad that gives me a coupon. Last year, the hubs and I went on a crazy good vacation to Vegas and stayed at the Bellagio for cheap because of an ad.

A man can indicate (to a certain extent) that they are sexually interested with an erection. A woman can't really do the same thing. It's difficult to have sex with an unaroused man. It's very easy to do so with an unaroused woman. Having sex with an struggling woman can be erotic. Sex with a struggling man generally isn't erotic in heterosexual encounters.
