Moving to Goldsboro, what do I need to know? by kablamiin NorthCarolina

[–]doctorcaligari 1 point2 points ago

Hell, I remember when they started on all of it back in the early 1990's. My family had to go to the info meetings because some of the proposals ran through our house.

The full Hwy 70 will probably be completed about the time I become too old to drive.

Hey Goldsboro peeps, did you know that someone created a /r/GoldsboroNC?

It only has one story though.

Goldsboro native here. Lived here all my life (except for college)...

Good areas to live: The Rosewood area (west of town) is probably the hottest right now. There are also many good subdivisions in the northern part of the county (Nahunta-Pikeville-Saulston). The Eastern Wayne district (Pinewood-New Hope-Elroy) is closest to the main part of town (Berkeley Blvd.), and would be a good choice as well. Walnut Creek is the high-dollar area, and is located east of town near Lagrange. I'm sure there are good places south of the river, but I'm not as familiar with that area.

To Do: Eat! I can recommend Royal Bangkok Thai, Torero's, Wilbur's, George's Grill, Rudy's Grill, Sumo's, Fuji's, Bonfire's, Cook Out, La Paz, Narita Express, Brooklyn Pizza, B&G Grill. There are all of the major chains here as well. We are getting an Olive Garden, a Longhorn, and an East Coast Wings (I can't wait for that one).

The Cliffs of the Neuse is a nice state park. There are lots of golf courses around (Goldsboro, Lane Tree, Southern Wayne, Sleepy Creek, Walnut Creek... and a short drive away... The Cardinal, Wedgewood, Willow Creek).

The part that is supposed to be done by 2015 is from Princeton to Lagrange. They still haven't approved (or secured funding for) anything past that (Kinston bypass is next, supposedly).

It's not Puppetta's anymore, it's now Iliano's. The owners of Puppetta's moved to High Point. Iliano's is still really good. The new steak place is called Carl & Chelle's Grill Room. It's sort of like the Beefmaster in Wilson, where they bring the meat out & cut your steak in front of you.

No exit after 9 pm at Jordan Lake? by DoorGuotein triangle

[–]doctorcaligari 9 points10 points ago

Yes, all NC state parks do this, and have done so as far back as I remember (early 1980's). The hours are posted at the entrances (and the closing times change throughout the year... generally it's 1 hour after sunset).

It's not really arcane as much as it's put into place to keep riff-raff out. After dark, the campers go to sleep. They don't want to be kept up all night by people driving around. And the rangers have to go to sleep some time.

Moving to NC: Recommended city/area to live? by heynatein NorthCarolina

[–]doctorcaligari 1 point2 points ago

Shelby is about 20 minutes away, and is about 20 minutes from Gastonia, which is 15 minutes away from Charlotte.

I had never heard of Forest City until your post. From now on, I will know it as the halfway point between Asheville & Charlotte.

I wish I could afford such a nice set. Mine is the cheap Dunlop set you find a Wal-Mart. The stand didn't even last a day.

I play with my old Electric Scoreball set from the 70's. It vibrates really loud, and I usually get tired of playing by the 7th quarter.

Sam's Club has the basic Serta queen for $300. Boxsprings are an extra $100, but I just used my old one. Sleeps great. And that's with two overweight people on it (about 550 lbs total).

Hey NC, I have a question for all of you! by alemacin NorthCarolina

[–]doctorcaligari 0 points1 point ago

I left out the more secondary & local history (which I am more interested in) because I felt it was too eclectic for what he was writing about. Those were:

  • The lost nuclear bomb that resides NE of Goldsboro, as a result of a B-52 crash in 1961
  • The Tuscarora War (1711-1713), which eventually caused the Tuscarora to move to NY to join the Iroquois. Their capital was near present day Snow Hill. Some of the Tuscarora stayed, mingling with the settlers (my 3x great-grandmother was Tuscorora).
  • Edenton being the first colonial capital of NC, and the Edenton Tea Party
  • The battles of Fort Macon & Fort Fisher during the American Civil War
  • The Battle of Bentonville, one of the last battles of the American Civil War

The location of the Lost Colony may have been discovered - and like I suspected, Arnold Palmer is involved. by ForMoreBestPowerin NorthCarolina

[–]doctorcaligari 0 points1 point ago

TIL that Bertie County (one of the poorest in the state) has an Arnold Palmer-designed golf course.

Hey NC, I have a question for all of you! by alemacin NorthCarolina

[–]doctorcaligari 22 points23 points ago

The Lost Colony/Roanoke Island, late 1580's
Blackbeard, Bath & Ocracoke (early 1700's)
Tryon Palace, New Bern, mid-1700's
Battle of Guilford Courthouse (1781, in Greensboro), American Revolution
Tobacco, Barbecue (eastern & western style), Krispy Kreme
Each region has a different culture (mountains, piedmont, coastal)
NC was largely poor & rural until after WWII. Large military bases brought improved infrastructure. Growth exploded in the last 20 years.
Charlotte = banking center
Sit-ins, Wright Bros. of course
Thomas Wolfe (Asheville), O. Henry (from Greensboro)
Probably a whole bunch of stuff I'm forgetting
