Eighteen new speed cams to hit MoCo this month by mcjimmybingoin MontgomeryCountyMD

[–]andrew271828 0 points1 point ago

It's a tax on people who insist on driving 12+ mph over the speed limit. If you don't want to be taxed all you have to do is don't speed. It's not like you're being forced to go way over the speed limit.

It's amazing how much Chinatown and Silver Spring have changed since then. Chinatown looks like a dump (I'm sure some will argue it still does) and I think the only buildings in the Silver Spring picture that still exist are the apartment building on the left edge and the one in the distance.

As someone else who works in IT I have to say that what you're doing it completely and totally wrong. I have had access to hundreds of email accounts and I haven't gone snooping through a single one. You have serious ethics problems and are in no way fit for your job. If I worked at your company and found out what you were doing I would do everything I could do get you fired, if not arrested.

$100 million dollar newly constructed Metro Transit Center may need to be torn down and started over. by legalhandcannonin washingtondc

[–]andrew271828 7 points8 points ago

This is just alarmist crap. They're not going to demolish the whole structure when they could just add supports and fill in the concrete. I think somebody produced a report with a list of all of the options and one of those options was tear down the structure and start over. Being on the list doesn't mean it's going to happen.

This was on my windshield like it was a ticket but clearly isn't-- what is it? by soggy_bisquickin washingtondc

[–]andrew271828 4 points5 points ago

Yes, and since your car had been in the same spot for a few days maybe an attendent left it in your windshield to determine if your car had been abandoned.

Apartments on the Orange Line by cowmein nova

[–]andrew271828 -1 points0 points ago

It may be true that price is not an issue, but you should decide what you're willing to spend first and use that as a guide when searching. If you want to you can spend $5000+ for an apartment on the orange line, but I don't think that is what you're looking for.

All the Speed Camera Locations in DC/MD by jbladein washingtondc

[–]andrew271828 0 points1 point ago

Maybe if there were lots of speed cameras everyone would drive close to the speed limit and the roads would be much safer? No, I guess that's just crazy talk.

Best way to travel from DC to Merriweather Post Pavilion? by SatelliteWatcherin washingtondc

[–]andrew271828 0 points1 point ago

I use zipcar regularly (since I don't own a car) and I don't have any of those problems. I have had a damaged car. You don't have to email photos, just call them and tell them about the damage. If you have to pay for gas out of pocket they will reimburse you. Maybe you should read their faq. Maybe you should also read the notes for the car when you rent it; in my experience they've always had pretty detailed instructions for getting in and out of garages when it's not obvious. I will say zipcars can get expensive, and they do smell like cigarettes sometimes because smokers are assholes, but I've never had any major problems.

Moving to Area - Quick Question by newguyinareain washingtondc

[–]andrew271828 0 points1 point ago

I used to live in Centreville and work near Manassas. It worked pretty well. There was very little traffic for my commute, although I did work later hours and that helped. The Vienna metro is about 15 minutes away when traffic is light (but 30 - 45 during rush hour). In general you probably want to stay on the I-66 corridor, and apartments are cheaper the further from DC you are.

West End Cinema in Dupont has a 2 for 1 Living Social deal by BlueOrangein washingtondc

[–]andrew271828 1 point2 points ago

The screens and the theaters are very small, but I recommend it because they play movies that no one else does (including E St. and AFI), and because they are an independent cinema.

Favorite DC-geography incongruities in film or television? by jenseitsin washingtondc

[–]andrew271828 2 points3 points ago

I thought Burn After Reading was the opposite of most of these movies in that it seemed to be true to DC geography. There's even one scene where Frances McDormand drops off George Clooney on Memorial Bridge after driving him from Georgetown (I think they even say P St. at one point). He intends to run back, and talks about it being 2 miles, which is just about right.

Favorite DC-geography incongruities in film or television? by jenseitsin washingtondc

[–]andrew271828 0 points1 point ago

It was supposed to be much longer. The original interstate plan included an I-266 that branched off of I-66, crossed the Potomac near the three sisters islands, and then continued to K St, which would've been part of I-66. Whitehurst Freeway is the only part that was constructed.

[–]andrew271828 0 points1 point ago

You really should give the F800R a try. It's much closer to the Street Triple than the F650GS is. Although if you're looking for a bike for longer rides the F800ST might be better.

3 years ago my head was run over by a truck in a motorcycle accident. AMA! by tw0bearsin IAmA

[–]andrew271828 3 points4 points ago

We shouldn't limit it to old people. Everyone should have to take a driving test every few years. It doesn't seem that it would be very difficult to create a driving simulation that could test people's reactions to various unexpected events on the road as well as being able to follow laws.

I also think that we (the US) should have graduated licenses. So a standard license would limit people to vehicles of maybe 3000 lbs and 150 hp (for the sake of argument). Then a separate licenses would be required to drive heavy vehicles and high performance vehicles, with test that show that drivers know how to drive them. And separate license fees of course. I think that if you actually need a big truck or SUV you can afford $1000/year for a license. If you have a business that's a small expense.

And (before I get off my soapbox), the driving tests every few years would obviously make licenses more expensive, but the fees could be waived or reduced for people with sufficiently low incomes.
