I would favour my beloved pet. My reason would be simply that this creature will have given me hope, joy and comfort when I needed it, will have been there for my lowest ebbs and my most happy moments and so I would do anything to preserve it.

Whilst I accept that a fellow human life is dubbed equal to mine and as a scientist, I know it to be greater than that of canines, felines etc in the sense that we can conduct mammalian models of infection etc on them if we can justify it - I would not let this classification affect my judgement for the pet. Just to clarify, I have no dogs, cats or even guinea pigs - I know their value though.

I'd say the OP is trying to prompt the general idea of asking if you would favour a "lesser" being over a fellow human based on affection. So would you favour a human who was an absolute unknown or a dear and beloved creature which had held your affections for years?
