who doesn't like pumptracks - Video by ScullmanTVin MTB

[–]AppropriateName 1 point2 points ago

Pesky neighbors who can't seem to mind their own business don't like pump tracks, that's who. We've had this lady try to get the pump track I built on a friends private property "shutdown". Her reasoning was she thought it was an eye sore. Maybe if she was a direct neighbor I'd give her that but she lives a 1/4 mile from the property. She's gone through the whole neighborhood trying to recruit support. Luckily everybody's shut her down so far. The funny thing is we even got her husband to "ride" the course once. Some people just like to hate things.

Took the forks of my dads bike which he hasn't used in a year and this crawled out... by koconn123in MTB

[–]AppropriateName 1 point2 points ago

I've noticed that with my bmx friends as well. Personally I can't remember a time when I called "forks" in place of fork, even when I did ride BMX.

My Daughter hitting the trails.. by itsmikein MTB

[–]AppropriateName[M] 2 points3 points ago

Proper bikes are expensive, and not everybody has the extra money just laying around. It would not be very wise to purchase a $1500 bike for somebody that might not use it. So until their daughter decides that she would indeed like to MTB, there isn't a need to buy anything else.

There is a very low chance that a first time MTB rider would be able to do enough damage [to a box store bike] where the rider's safety would come into question.

And just for the record, superiority complexes are unwelcome here in /r/mtb.

If you get vans get the Gravels, those use trax rubber, a high friction compound.

Fiveten and Teva both have models with a high friction rubber compound and that's what you want.

Yeti has great online owners manuals. Here's the one of the SB66 and here's the SB66 carbon manual. Their owner manuals are really handy for things like cable routing, shock set up, amongst other things.

Good luck!

The reason your post is receiving downvotes is because this video has been posted many times this week from various sources.

I'll just point out that the title of the video is "VW Passat 78.5 MPG (Imperial gallon) 65.2 MPG US gallon in the Uk".

Why we love downhill by mschneidiein MTB

[–]AppropriateName 1 point2 points ago

I think what is making you perceive that these riders are "lacking skill" is that we are actually seeing clips of extremely talented races riding on the edge of their limits. It just goes to show that the best riders are not perfect, and make errors like the rest of us.

Asking /r/mtb: What Forums do you primarily go to besides reddit? by jeremyridesbikesin MTB

[–]AppropriateName 1 point2 points ago

  • Pinkbike, avoid the forums like the Plague. Their front page, classifieds, POV, and VOD are usually awesome. Their comment section is populated by 12 year olds.

  • VitalMTB, their forums aren't very active, sometimes there's an interesting thread. During the World Cup season their slideshows can't be topped. Can have good news, but usually not as well written as pinkbike's.

  • Ridemonkey.com Their front page is doesn't really do much for me, but the Downhill Forum can have some really valuable information and discussions from time to time.

  • ObservedTrials.net; there's usually some interesting trials videos in the media section.

  • Trials-forum.co.uk; has some another resource for interesting trials videos.

  • Hcor.net/forum; Blast from the past. It's fun to go back and re-read old threads from 5+ years ago.

The Sunday will ALWAYS be a classic to me. by AusMaverickin MTB

[–]AppropriateName 1 point2 points ago

Compared to newer bikes, Sunday's have aged extremely well. At the time 2/3 of the bikes at a DH race were Iron Horse Sundays. I still wonder if Iron horse would still dominate the market if they were still around.

Consumer grade Camcorder for action sports self filming. by AppropriateNamein videography

At this point, that's kind of what I'm thinking. I've been pretty meticulously browsing over specs the spec sheets of all the 5 main camcorder manufactures. I'm just curious if I've overlooked anything.

I love how versatile GoPros are, but I still need something that meets my needs.

Anyway, thanks for that bit of info, I'm curious to check that out. :]

Go-pros have similar limitations as my kodak Zx5. I don't expect cinematic quality out of a consumer grade camera but I need something a few steps up from what go-pros offer.

Now that's a bunny hop.. by h00din MTB

[–]AppropriateName 0 points1 point ago

Clipless don't really help you hop

A pile of bullshit I've been told until I saw it myself. With platform pedals you have to turn them 45+ degrees to gain friction you need to drag the bike up (aka scooping) once the front wheel is up. With clipless, depending on style, you can literally lift the bike up with your feet with little or no angle. There is a massive difference.

In reality, If a person is using their feet to "scoop" the bike up in a bunny hop, then that person is not performing a bunny hop properly. Clips have little to no affect on the height of a bunny hop. However, inexperience riders using clips tend to rely too much on using their legs to lift the bike off the ground.

I'd recommend that you watch a few real bike trial videos. Some good riders to look into are Benito Ros, and Thomas R Aasen. I'll let you see for yourself if you still think clipless pedals offer much of an advantage over platform pedals.

Impressive! That's commitment and the rider's part and HUGE trust on the other party's.

Pump Track by leringerin MTB

[–]AppropriateName 0 points1 point ago

Yeah, I have a few friends that crossed over from XC that tried to build, but it never really turns out as well as they had hoped. The best builders tend to be former or current BMX dirt jumpers since they have to be more meticulous about not having bumps, and making sure things are packed.

Yeah, I really dig Goldfsh and their sound. Since you said they were near you I could only assume you had posted this photo a while ago. I had to go back and double check.

Thanks!

I used a Kodak Zx5. The camera retails at $175, but you can find it new on Amazon and ebay for $85 shipped. I also bought a cheapo wide angle lens, and a mini tripod at the dollar store. It was the most affordable good camera I could find that does 1080p @ 30 fps and 720p @ 60 fps. It doesn't do very well in low light situations. I'm currently in a market for a better camera, but this one is good for close up shots and not worrying about damaging it. It's rugged and water proof. Hope that helps.
